Dr. Kiersten Madden was appointed Stewardship Coordinator of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) in 2008. Prior to working for the NERR, Kiersten received a BA in Biology from Augustana College in 2002 and a PhD in Marine Science from The University of Texas at Austin in 2007. Her dissertation focused on understanding the foraging ecology of seals, sea lions, and fur seals. She also has previous work experience in biological surveys, environmental education, and restoration. As Stewardship Coordinator for the NERR, Kiersten is responsible for promoting public appreciation and support for the protection of natural resources through the integration of research and education. Her responsibilities include: (1) monitoring management practices among Reserve partners, (2) supporting cleanup and recycling programs, (3) characterizing the Reserve through habitat mapping, (4) promoting Reserve initiatives at public events, (5) initiating restoration projects with partners, and (6) identifying potential areas for land acquisition.
