Mel Cooksey - Annual Whooping Crane Festival in Port Aransas, Texas

Mel began birding as a youngster in the Missouri Ozarks in the 1950’s. Since moving to the Texas Coast in the 1980’s, he has developed a passion for the study of birds of the region, with interests in abundance status, distribution, migration trends, and identification challenges. Mel has been a speaker and trip leader at ABA and TOS meetings, has compiled various checklists, and has served as organizer and compiler for Audubon Christmas Counts in Kansas and Texas. He has also served as a member of the Texas Bird Records Committee, and as sub-regional editor for North American Birds magazine. He is the co-author of A Birder’s Guide to the Texas Coast, an ABA/Lane Birdfinding Guide. His most devoted birding companion is his wife Arlie, who is also an excellent birder.
