Sunday, February 23 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

Joan and Scott Holt

Join local bird experts Dr. Joan and Scott Holt to explore the Port Aransas Nature Preserve. This Sunday morning field trip begins at 8am and will meet at the Community Park near the back entrance walkway to the Preserve. Scott and Joan will lead the group along a walkway in the preserve through grasslands and edges of the marsh. They will identify birds and butterflies and even talk about grassland ecology, pointing out flowers and grasses. The trip will cover about 1 mile on solid walkways and will last 3 hours.

About the Holts: Scott and Joan Holt are both marine biologists who worked at The University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas for more than 30 years. Scott retired in 2011 and is currently a Research Fellow and Joan retired in September 2013. Along with their interest in marine fish, they also studied birds for over 30 years, carrying out surveys of the seasonal distribution of birds in Mexico and in South Texas, as well as ecological studies of the flora and fauna in critical avian habitat. Joan has been training youth birding teams for the Great Texas Birding Classic competition for nine years and Scott has captained the Port Aransas Big Sit Classic team since its beginning. They are co-compilers of the Port Aransas Christmas Bird Count that has been ongoing since 1977 and have worked to preserve and design both the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center and the Joan and Scott Holt Paradise Pond.
