Field Trip: Birds of Lamar Peninsula with Mikael Behrens

Saturday, February 23 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$50

This guided van tour will travel north of Port Aransas to discover the birds of the scenic Lamar Peninsula. The tour will be mostly birding from the roadside to try and find Whooping Cranes that often use the private fields north of Goose Island State Park. Sometimes they can be seen side-by-side with Sandhill Cranes! There are many other interesting birds in these fields and the bay as well (bring a spotting scope if you have one).

The tour will also look for songbirds at the Big Tree, which is estimated to be around 1,000 years old and one of the largest live oak trees in Texas and the U.S. On the way back to Port Aransas, the tour will bird the small Linda Castro Nature Preserve in Rockport, where the pond usually has wild ducks and Least Grebes.

Please note, this trip involves riding the Port Aransas ferry, and wait times can be difficult to predict.
