Presentation: Eight Years In – The Challenges and Successes of Reintroducing Whooping Cranes in Louisiana

Bio: Although she has no idea where all that time has gone (and it makes her feel old to think about it!), Sara has been working with whooping cranes for 20 years!  She studied biology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she grew up, and while she liked birds and was interested in them she never would have predicted that her career would focus on them.  She was first introduced to cranes working with the captive flock at the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  In addition to working with the captive cranes, part of her responsibilities while there included working on the eastern migratory reintroduction project, tracking birds on their migration south to Florida. Whooping cranes have taken her from Wisconsin to Florida, even to South Dakota and New York!  Most recently, whooping cranes brought Sara to Louisiana where she works on the newest whooping crane reintroduction project and where she’s learned more about rice and crawfish aquaculture than she ever could have imagined.
