Wood Buffalo National Park, Parks Canada

Rhona Kindopp
Manager of Resource Conservation

Following 10 years as the ecologist at Wood Buffalo National Park, Rhona Kindopp is currently the Manager of Resource Conservation there. She lives in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Canada, which is the hub of the Park’s operations and also her home town! It was a childhood spent building forts in the woods, bike riding forest trails and collecting bugs and catching minnows from the shoreline at Pine Lake in the park that inspired her career in conservation.

Rhona studied environmental science and wildlife biology at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. She is grateful for an exciting dynamic career that has provided the opportunity to work on a variety of conservation issues related to the boreal forest, wetlands, species at risk and species of cultural significance to the Indigenous communities in and surrounding Wood Buffalo National Park. As part of Parks Canada’s stewardship of whooping cranes and their nesting grounds, Rhona is involved in annual nesting, chick and fledgling surveys and has contributed to the collection of important telemetry data and the monitoring of habitat conditions on the nesting grounds. She considers her work with whooping cranes to be one of the highlights of her career and personal experiences at Wood Buffalo National Park.
