Friday, February 22 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Shorebird Identification Workshop

Mel Cooksey of Corpus Christi, is a lifelong birder with a special interest in bird status and distribution, migration trends, and subtle identification techniques. His special interests are shorebirds, sparrows and flycatchers. Mel has served as sub-regional editor for American Birds, Field Notes and North American Birds magazines, and as a speaker, field trip coordinator and leader for Texas Ornithological Society conventions. He has also worked as speaker and field trip leader for American Birding Association Texas events. He has served on the Texas and Kansas Bird Records Committees. Mel presently is eBird reviewer for the Coastal Bend counties.

Mel is instructor for the Texas Ornithological Society’s Shorebird Weekender, held in August, as well as presenter and trip leader for the shorebird portion of the Corpus Christi Botanical Garden’s Birdiest City Festival, held in late April.

Mel will share with you the expected shorebird species in the Coastal Bend in winter and early spring, and help you with some key means of identification- applying size, shape, and behavior as well as plumage, in order to sort out the more confusing shorebirds such as “peeps” and dowitchers.
