Dave Brandt - Annual Whooping Crane Festival in Port Aransas, Texas

Dave Brandt, Wildlife Biologist, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center (USGS), Jamestown, North Dakota

Presentation: A Decade of Capture and Tracking of Aransas-Wood Buffalo Whooping Cranes: Some Discoveries to Date

Bio: Dave began his career in the early 1990s researching breeding waterfowl ecology in the Northern Great Plains, attaching radio-transmitters to newly hatched ducklings and monitoring them through fledging. In the late 1990s, Dave began working with Sandhill Cranes on the Platte River in Nebraska, capturing and attaching tracking devices to over 700 cranes to study their annual cycle and other detailed aspects of their life history.  In 2009 Dave was invited to assist in capturing and radio marking Whooping Cranes from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo population and since then has been involved in capturing and marking over 100 wild Whooping Cranes on both their breeding and wintering grounds.  Research from these efforts is being used to guide management and recovery of this imperiled population.
